Legendary Irish singer-songwriter and activist Sinead O’Connor died of natural causes, officials in London said on Tuesday, January 9.

O’Connor, best known for her rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” died at the age of 56 in July 2023.

The Southwark Coroner’s Court said in a statement that “the coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death” and will make no further comments.

O’Connor released her critically acclaimed debut album The Lion And The Cobra in 1987 and broke through in 1990 with her No. 1 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was written and composed by Prince.

The following year, she said she would boycott the Grammy Awards, saying the Recording Academy awarded artists based on commercial success.

The outspoken singer-songwriter released 10 studio albums, with her most recent being 2014’s I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss.

She made headlines in 1993 when she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II during an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” as a protest against sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.
